Perio Technology
We are very excited about two new technologies that we have introduced in our periodontal department for fighting gum disease. Periodontal refers to the health of the gums and supporting structures of the teeth. During the hygiene examination both the hygienist and the doctor use a probe to measure the pocket depth. The pocket is the distance that the probe slides along the tooth into the gum before it reaches the bony support. It should be 1-3mm (millimeters). We have just introduced an automated probe which takes the operator out of the equation. It measures the pocket and, using voice activation, tells you the depth of the pocket and whether there is any bleeding (a sign of gum disease). The probe also provides a printout charting the pocket depths throughout your entire mouth as a permanent record for your file. This will allow us to accurately track your periodontal health and monitor both progression and cessation of gum disease.

We are also pleased to be able to provide our patients with the latest advancement for scaling and root planing. When the hygienist cleans your teeth or performs more advanced procedures such as scaling and root planning, she has traditionally used hand instruments or cavitron ultrasonics. The new “Pro Select” system is a self contained Piezo scaler. Its frequency is so high that it removes tartar (Calculus) with barely any contact with the tooth. Its self contained system uses warmed water and several other warmed antimicrobials not only to clean but also to do so with solutions that destroy the bad bacteria at the same time. With more advanced periodontal disease, we also incorporate the Water Laser which essentially sterilizes the pocket. This is a major advancement in the non-surgical treatment of periodontal disease.
