New Help for Periodontal Disease
Along with our commitment to non-surgical treatment of periodontal disease, we have added two treatments to our hygiene department. First, we have Oraqix, a needle-free subgingival anesthetic gel which is used for adults who require a localized anesthetic during scaling or root planing.

Secondly, we have added Arestin, a tetracycline derivative which has been proven to be one of the most potent antibiotics to fight periodontal bacteria. Arestin is used with scaling and root planing procedures for reduction of pocket depth in patients with adult periodontitis. Both Oraqix and Arestin are administered by the dental hygienist.

Of course, along with these new treatments, we are still able to go to the next level of non-surgical treatment using a dental laser. Please call the office with any questions you may have regarding these new treatments.

Keep in mind that once you have been diagnosed with periodontal disease, you will always have the disease due to the damage that it does to your body. Careful daily hygiene and regular dental visits to clean your pockets are required to keep the bacteria from returning. After the initial dental appointments to remove the bacteria, you will be placed on a regular appointment schedule called “periodontal maintenance” to keep your pockets free of bacteria.

Remember, it is always better to prevent disease than to treat disease. Think of periodontal disease as you think of diabetes. You do not cure diabetes, you learn to control it.
