Root Canal Therapy
Approaches
Every tooth has a least 1 canal in each root. The root canal contains the nerves and blood vessels that keep a tooth healthy. Anything that damages the canal can cause its contents to cause pain. The most common causes of root canal problems are decay progressing close to the nerve or trauma to the tooth.
When decay progresses toward the nerve it causes a “toothache.” Trauma to the tooth can also cause this inflammation of the nerve. The long term of damage to the root canal is a dying of the contents of the canal leading to the infected tooth called an abscess. Whether the pain is caused by an acute toothache or a chronic abscess the treatment is the same, root canal therapy.
Root canal therapy has gotten some bad press over the years but in most instances can be performed painlessly. Root canal therapy involves use of tiny instruments to enter the canal and remove the inflamed or infected tissue inside the tooth.
At Hutt Dentistry we also use a laser to debride and sterilize the inside of the canal. After the root canal is cleaned it is filled with a plastic like material to seal it and reduce the chance of infection returning. Most teeth that undergo root canal therapy usually require a crown to strengthen the tooth and prevent it from fracture.
