Arestin
Dr. Hutt is one of only five dental practices in Northern New Jersey to be trained and certified in the use of Arestin (locally administered antibiotic)
Periodontal disease is a chronic bacterial infection at the gums. It is the #1 cause of adult tooth loss. It is a painless infection. Harmful bacteria travel beneath the gum line and create pockets or spaces around the teeth. If untreated it leads to bone loss and eventually tooth loss. It affects 3 out of 4 adults. A person can have 1 pocket or many if left untreated it well spread.
The treatment for periodontal disease begins with scaling and root planing. Scaling removes plaque, tartar and stains for the surfaces of the teeth. Planing smoothes the rough areas on the roots of the teeth to promote healing. Scaling and root planing is designed to:
- replace the bacteria causing the infection
- shrink the size of the pocket
- control the infection to prevent it from worsening
In more severe situations we use our waterlase that sterilize the pockets.
Clinical studies have shown that adding a locally administered antibiotic call Arestin aids at shrinking the size of the infected pockets. ARESTIN® is an effective antibiotic treatment that comes in powder form. This powder is placed inside infected periodontal pockets. The ARESTIN® powder contains "Microspheres," which are tiny, bead-like particles that are smaller than grains of sand and are not visible to the eye. The Microspheres are filled with the antibiotic minocycline, and they release the drug over time into the infected periodontal pocket, killing bacteria that live there, hopefully eliminating the need for future gum surgery
